PLECTRUM TUNING SETS

We now offer an Extra Light Gauge Plectrum Set suitable for use on all Ukuleles. This set is only available as an Add-On from the Linear Set page (linked at the bottom). This set is especially recommended for the Soprano and Concert Ukuleles - on the Soprano it can be tuned an octave above traditional fixed note Plectrum tuning. For the deepest tuning recommended for the Tenor Ukulele, see the LP set below. For the deepest tuning recommended for the Baritone Ukulele, see the HMP set below To sample this tuning, any of the sets below can also be purchased in the Add-On form from the Linear page. For additional uses for these sets, simply use the corresponding tuning charts  on the Linear set page for reference.  Tune the 2nd & 3rd strings per Linear set recommendations. Tune the 4th & 1st strings a step down from Linear Tuning notes.
LP-WB: Light Gauge Plectrum Set w/ wound bass This set has a single polished 4th string and three matched plain strings. It will give the deepest, fully resonant notes on the typical Tenor Ukulele. If you need reference notes at first, tune to g d’ f#’ a’ . This set can also be used for a higher, brighter sound on on a typical Baritone Ukulele. For that use start off by tuning down a step from the Tenor note suggestions.

Derived from the Plectrum Banjo, and with a beautiful classical

repertoire, whether played fingerstyle or with a pick, it can be argued

that the arrangement of strings in Plectrum tuning gives the greatest

breadth, flexibility and the finest sound for melody playing of any 4-

string tuning.  This is especially true for typical “guitar style” playing,

where bass notes contrast with the melody strings.

Note:  For brevity and simplicity, all tunings for the sets below are written out in standard       notation.  If you’re not familiar with “the Standard” a chart can be found on the Terminology page.       Also see “Writing Notes in Standard Notation” (temporarily offline) to see how to use “the Standard” with no music training.
   Emile Grimshaw - Plectrum Composer
This set has two polished strings for the 4th & 3rd together with two matched plain strings. This set will give the deepest, fully resonant notes on the typical Baritone Ukulele. If you need reference notes at first, tune to e b d#’ f#’ where it will give a firm tension. Often, depending on the instrument, this set can relaxed a half step or so and still give four fully resonant notes. HMP-WB: Heavy Medium Gauge Plectrum Set w/ wound basses This set has two polished strings for the 4th & 3rd together with two matched plain strings. This set will have the preferred tension of most players for the traditional fixed tuning of c g b d’ on a 23” scale. The strings will produce too deep a tone on Ukuleles for best response. LHP-WB: Light Heavy Gauge Plectrum Set w/ wound basses
